About

About Rachel

I did my BSc in Physics at the University of Leeds, where I particularly focused on medical physics and experimental quantum physics. I graduated in 2011 and went straight into my PhD which I will hopefully complete in October 2015.

My PhD studies are split between the Experimental Quantum Information Group in Physics at Leeds University and the Bioengineering and Health Technologies Group in Dentistry at Sheffield University. I am currently trying to develop methods for imaging and analysis of bone tissue cultures while they are growing using a form of Raman spectroscopy.

When I finish my PhD I currently plan to apply to become a Medical Physicist, so I can work in the NHS to provide support in either medical imaging or radiotherapy. However, I do have about 18 months of my PhD left, so who knows what might happen in the mean time.

When I’m not working, my main interests are reading, taekwondo, watching TV and gaming.  Basically, I'm a card carrying geek who loves nothing more than a good game of Dungeons and Dragons on a weekend with her friends. Additionally, I love performing arts and I’m part of a theatre group run by Wakefield Theatre Royal for young theatre makers where I write, act and occasionally play the violin.

About the Blog

In this blog I'm hoping to give you a window into my world of lasers and cells as well as snapshots of my life outside the lab.
New content will be added every Monday (all being well), alternating between short link roundups and more in depth posts.

I'm very pleased to say that this blog is part of the Ogden Trust's Blogden program which aims to share the experiences of trust alumni, and to give people an insight into where involvement in physics and science might take you. The Ogden Trust are a fantastic educational organisation, which promotes participation in science and physics to young people from all over the UK. However, all opinions and posts on the blog are entirely my own and are not representative of the views and opinions of the Ogden Trust or its staff.
